William Kent: A Legacy of Philanthropy
Throughout our nation's history, men and women of great vision have sought to preserve and protect our country’s natural treasures. In 1905, inspired by the beauty and significance of a stand of ancient redwoods in Marin County, William Kent, conservationist, philanthropist, congressman, and visionary, purchased the land now known as Muir Woods. He later donated the land to the federal government to be preserved as a national park. The first philanthropic gift to the National Park Service began a citizen-inspired movement that created the Golden Gate National Parks, and served as a model for the preservation of other cherished landmarks and open space nationwide. We invite you to join the William Kent Society, and continue this century of stewardship at the Golden Gate.
