The Golden Gate National Parks are 125 square miles of federally protected coastlines, grasslands, oak woodlands, and towering redwood forests. The Golden Gate National Parks comprise one of the largest urban park in the world, offering a spectacular blend of nature and history that is enjoyed by 20 million visitors each year.

Site Stewardship Volunteer ...But Looks Can Be Deceiving...

A closer look, however, reveals the extent to which this unique urban environment has been severely impacted by past land uses within the park and increasing urban development along park boundaries. There are at least 33 rare or endangered plant and animal species in the park today.

You Can Be Part of the Solution!

The Site Stewardship Program was created in 1993 to bring people together to protect and restore ecologically sensitive areas within the Golden Gate National Parks. The program focuses its efforts on four high priority park sites, all of which support endangered species:

By restoring native species, habitats, and natural processes, volunteers are actively becoming part of the solution. People of all ages and backgrounds are working together to rebuild communities, both human and ecological.
